OUR HISTORY
In 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, then the managing director of the Guinness Brewery, realised that a book supplying the answers to this sort of question might prove popular. He was right!
Guinness World Records in Leipzig
The staff of Guinness World Records™: Gamer's Edition swooped in on Leipziger Messe in Leipzig, Germany, last week and made the 2008 Games Convention a memorable one for a few new Guinness World Record holders.
The surprise certificate presentation blitz included David Rutter, the producer on Electronic Arts' FIFA series, who was overwhelmed to receive the certificate for Most consecutive football series releases on a single platform. "I can't believe it. This is an amazing surprise! I've always wanted to be in the Guinness World Records book– my mum will be delighted."
The Guinness World Record for most games in an action-adventure series went to the 23 entries in Castlevania series and was collected by Koji Igarashi, current producer of the series. Two classic fighting game franchises were also recognised with Hector Sanchez, associate producer of the Mortal Kombat games, accepting the record for the most successful fighting game series and Michael Auer picking up Capcom's certificate for Street Fighter II, the first fighting game to use combos. In total 12 Guinness World Record certificates were awarded at the show.
We also premiered three mini-games from Guinness World Records: The Videogame to rapturous crowds. Gamers of all ages attempted to beat the high scores set by the developers during the game's production and the Guinness World Records for all three mini-game were smashed during the show.
Max Schoenemann from Hoyerswerda, Germany, took just 13.71 seconds to secure the fastest time ever to shear five sheep, shaving almost five seconds off the previous time of 18.62 seconds.
Florian Mack from Leipzig, Germany, smashed 60 melons in a minute with his head, crushing the previous world record holder's score of 40 melons.
Finally, Christian Kurka from Thuringen popped 100 balloons in an incredible 10.48 seconds, deflating the previous score of 13.85 seconds!
Well done to all these new Guinness World Record holders and look out for the Guinness World Records: The Videogame, due out for Nintendo Wii and DS in October 2008 and the Guinness World Records: Gamer's Edition 2009 in February 2009.
