Beat This – Rez HD (Xbox 360)

Rez HD

Rez is a classic example of a game that was crying out for a visual upgrade - the hypnotic trance soundtrack was always spot-on, but it felt like the last-gen graphics badly wanted to be just that little bit sharper. This new full HD version not only makes Rez a lot prettier, but also allows for more detail (and more accurate shooting!).

It plays like a fairly standard on-rails shooter but manages to combine the sound, visuals, attacks and enemies into a pulsing trance that feels a bit like playing space invaders in a disco. Everyone loved the original Rez back in 2003, and with this re-release scoring 10/10 from the likes of 1up.com and Eurogamer, it's one of 2008's must-haves.

The score attack modes are unlockable once you complete each zone once and from then on you're playing on standard arcade-style rules: shoot the bad guys, don't get hit, rack up combos.

The Xbox Live Arcade leaderboards are hovering around the 300,000 points mark for the first four areas, so if you reckon you can demonstrate a score of 250,000 or more on any of them then let us know - register for the attempt, send us your evidence and get the record you deserve.

For those who haven't experienced the definitive trance shooter, you'd be well advised to download the demo from Xbox Live Arcade and see what you're missing out on.
